The best time to go skiing?
Christmas, New Year, Easter, Half Term skiing… The lowdown on when to ski.
December
If you’re looking to sneak in a ski trip before Christmas, then the first week or two of the season offers great value pricing AND the slopes to yourselves. Of course, snow conditions are not 100% guaranteed but here in Courchevel, the natural snow is topped up by the snow machines using the mountain reservoirs to add snow onto the busiest areas.
Courchevel is also renowned for having some of the very best snow grooming in any ski resort in the world, it’s something we pride ourselves on! So rest assured that by choosing to ski pre-Christmas, you’ll still have plenty of skiing.
Courchevel’s lifts usually open up from the first Saturday of December, with La Tania opening the following weekend.
Our guests that come and stay during first tracks weeks are those who like to fit in two weeks during the winter, often travelling with friends, before their main family holiday later in the season.
Good For: Keen skiers!
Christmas
If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, then it makes sense total to escape to the mountains! With beautiful scenery, twinkling lights and a general air of festive cheer, Courchevel is a magical place to spend your December skiing holiday, and what better way to relax than in a catered chalet when you can really take a break from the housework?
On the 25th, our fabulous hosts will cook a roast turkey with all the trimmings, then serve it alongside unlimited wine and as many roast potatoes as you can eat! Relish the opportunity to build a snowman (whether you have kids or not) instead of slaving away in the kitchen… Our Ski Magic chalets sleep between 8-12 guests, so take the opportunity to bring grandparents, aunties and cousins together for a Christmas to remember. There are lots of lovely walks and activities for non-skiers to enjoy, as well as bars, restaurants and pedestrian lifts.
Good For: Relaxation and magical memories
New year
What can we say? It’s one of the most popular times to ski because it’s such fun to be in a ski resort at New Year. Here in Courchevel we have reliable snow, parties on the piste, fireworks and torchlit descents, not to mention hot tubs and roaring log fires. It’s simply the place to be.
The fantastic bonus of a New Year skiing holiday is that whizzing down a snowy piste is one of the only hangover cures to actually work! The mere act of concentrating on something very important (not falling over) whilst being in crisp, fresh mountain air is extremely reviving to anyone who has indulged in one too many the night before.
If you’re travelling with a group then we can accommodate parties of up to 16 or 22 in our neighbouring chalet options.
Good For: Party people!
January
Guests that ski in January appreciate having the pistes to themselves as well as mint conditions. There’s usually been a few decent snowfalls and they’re often treated to fresh powder.
The lightest powder needs colder temperatures, but wrap up warm and make time for hot chocolate stops, and your heart will be won over by January skiing.
With no school holidays in January either, you won’t have to wait to get a seat on the lift, so you get even better value for money in terms of time spent skiing.
We have chalets with log fires and hot tubs so there is plenty of opportunity to get cosy on the wintry nights.
Good For: Powder hounds
February
If you have school-aged children then half term is a very popular week to visit the mountains as the snow is great, and the weather is milder.
It’s a great time to enjoy a family skiing holiday without any of the stress of shopping, cooking or cleaning – you can totally relax, make the most of your days on the slopes and have fun with your children.
Courchevel is a great choice as it has a good selection of reputable ski schools, the lifts are really very speedy so that means less crowding, and 80% of the skiing is between 1180m-2738m so there’s plenty of snow to go around.
There are lots of Courchevel activities during February such as fireworks and torchlit descents on the mountains.
Good for: Stress-free family skiing
March
For anyone whose idea of a ski trip is cruising around on lovely snow either side of a leisurely lunch stop, then March skiing holidays are for you!
Our March chalet guests are often groups of friends or workmates who enjoy a relaxed vibe and plenty of sunny skiing. Our chalets have good sized rooms and en suite bathrooms so are ideal for friends sharing, and we have a choice of chalets with hot tub or private swimming pool.
It’s a great time for beginners as the snow is a little softer than January, and the warmer temperatures and longer days make it ideal to introduce newbies who think that skiing is ‘too cold’!
To make it easier to book a group holiday, we have put together lots of helpful information to give party leaders some tips on choosing, budgeting and planning a ski trip.
Good for: Beginners, groups and friends – everyone!
Easter
The resort of Courchevel stays open until the 3rd week in April, and this is where that North-facing aspect really makes the difference.
While other resorts may just have seen a bit too much of that lovely Spring sunshine, Courchevel is lucky and you can easily follow the sun around during the day to get the best out of your skiing. It can get slushy in the late afternoon, so take a leaf out of our book and ski high all morning then retire for a long, late lunch in the sunshine.
It’s a great time for a family skiing holiday, warm temperatures meaning children don’t get chilly (and at Easter you’ll find chocolate eggs in all the gondolas!)
Good for: Families, sunny days and high altitude skiing
Experience the ultimate ski holiday in our cosy chalets. With breathtaking mountain views and unbeatable comfort, its time to make your winter dreams come true.
